Triskel Marine is an agile marine tech company providing specialist data collection, management and telemetry services to the marine industry, as well as specialist product development.
Its wide range of solutions span marine energy management, vessel duty cycle monitoring, instrumentation for ports and harbours, water quality monitoring and hybrid control.
Pioneering work on leading edge projects
Established in 2003 by Managing Director Ken Wittamore, the company has a distinguished track record as an engineering science partner within high profile international collaborative projects. As well as pioneering work establishing practical techniques for measuring boat exhaust noise, the company’s extensive experience has included working as lead engineering partner on the ground-breaking multi-million EU funded project (HYMAR) to explore the practicality of hybrid propulsion for small boats. This was followed by the UK funded HEME project, a collaborative industrial research and development project focussed on vessel efficiency, where Triskel Marine delivered monitoring and control for the whole hybrid system.
Unique wealth of knowledge
Ken says: “Through these leading -edge research projects, we have built up a unique wealth of knowledge and expertise about hybrid energy and propulsion for small vessels, which has led to us being able to license some of our intellectual property to a large commercial partner.
“We are now developing a new product with huge potential in the hybrid marine energy sector, in close partnership with a multi-billion dollar engineering company in the United States. The marine hybrid sector is now poised to take off worldwide and we are extremely excited about the growth opportunities it creates for our company.”
Triskel Marine has recently moved to the Marine Enterprise Zone at Hayle in Cornwall, attracted by the flexible accommodation on offer.
Unrivalled testing facilities
Ken adds: “It is crucial that we can carry out our product testing and development to the world class standards expected by our major clients. At Hayle, we have been able to build testing facilities that are unrivalled in the UK. We have two engines running every day as we check every last detail of product performance, ready for launch in the USA later this year. There are few other locations where this quality of practical testing would be possible.
“Meanwhile, we are also benefitting from grant funding from the Cornwall programme, Marine-i, an EU funded initiative to support innovation in marine technology. This valuable cash injection is allowing us to fully invest in sophisticated infrastructure at this vital stage.”
Ken continues: “What’s more, Cornwall has a brilliant supply chain within the marine sector. The quality of the skills available in the county never ceases to amaze me – we have always been able to find any of the engineering skills or services we need. There are some incredibly experienced and effective businesses here. We also greatly value the very close relationships that we have built up with companies such as Mylor Yacht Harbour, who have diligently supported and maintained our test vessels.
“Triskel Marine is growing fast and looking to the future with confidence. We are now focussing on working closely with our major client on the launch of the new hybrid energy product, which we believe will be a European market leader within the hybrid market. We have our sights set firmly on international growth over the long term.
“Cornwall is the perfect place to develop our business and fulfil our potential. The outstanding facilities, the ready availability of funding, and the talented supply chain make for a winning combination.”
