Composite Integration provides market-leading solutions to the composites industry, specialising in Resin Transfer Moulding (RTM) and Resin Infusion processes. The company provides the equipment, tooling, materials and training that allow its clients to achieve the very best results from this technology. Research and technology play a central role in the business and this has allowed the company to innovate with customers across the marine, renewable energy, automotive and aerospace sectors.
Innovation has enabled expansion
Originally, the company’s work in the marine sector was mainly focused on smaller structures, such as hatch covers, which suit the RTM technique. However, their innovative work in developing equipment for Resin Infusion has allowed them to expand into larger structures such as hulls and decks. Resin Infusion is a process more suited to larger structures and produces extremely high-quality laminates under controlled conditions. This makes it ideal for vessels such as yachts and RIBs, while the company has also found applications in the wind energy sector.
Exporting from base in Cornwall
The company is based at Parkway Industrial Estate in Saltash, Cornwall, and has a worldwide network of distributors ranging from mainland Europe to South America, Russia, and the Far East, which helps it to reach a diverse range of international clients. Indeed, 70% of their products are exported overseas.
Stephen Leonard-Williams, who founded the company in 2002 with business partner Richard Bland, says: “We have found Cornwall to be a fantastic location from which to operate our business. There are lots of brilliant and innovative specialist tech businesses working in the area, and that creates a real buzz that inspires companies like ours to try new processes and new ideas. When we first developed our resin infusion technology, we worked closely with a large local yacht manufacturer, and the collaboration was of great mutual benefit.
Diverse international customer base
“When working with our marine customers, it obviously helps to be close to their sphere of operations. There is a very diverse marine customer base in Cornwall with which we can build up strong working relationships, including the emerging new sectors such as marine renewable energy, a sector where Cornwall has real strengths. There is an outstanding level of marine knowledge and expertise within Cornwall, which we can draw on whenever we need it.
“Communications and transport from our region are excellent. We have no problems reaching our international customer base from here.
“To illustrate the diverse range of international marine customers that we can handle: we have worked on products for a luxury boat manufacturer in Taiwan and structural sections of a Russian minesweeper!
Future growth opportunities
“We have grown very rapidly over recent years and now employ 26 people. We have been able to get invaluable help from some excellent business support services in Cornwall as we grow and develop our team. The other thing that helps our business is that the South West is such a great place to live, with an excellent quality of life, so when we attract the right people, we are more likely to keep them.
“As we look to the future, the prospects for our company look extremely positive. Composite moulding technology is able to deliver in line with important trends in marine and will continue to evolve: as composites can be lightweight and durable, they score highly on environmental and efficiency measures. We believe there are excellent future growth opportunities for us in global marine tech markets - in particular the USA, Germany and India – all of which we can service from our existing base here in Cornwall.”
