Fugro GeoServices is a leading provider of geo-intelligence and asset integrity solutions for large constructions, infrastructure and natural resources. The company provides the technical data and information required to design, construct and maintain structures and infrastructure in a safe, reliable and efficient manner, as well as foundation drilling and installation services for construction activities in marine and over-water environments. The company has provided services in every corner of the world, including Antarctica, Canada, South America and the Far East.
Fugro operate in a number of sectors: infrastructure, oil & gas, power, and mining. As system builders they have provided a variety of marine engineering solutions to aid the installation of structures such as jetties, bridges, offshore jackets, offshore wind turbines (fixed and floating), quay walls, berthing structures and shafts for intakes/outfalls for desalinisation plants and nuclear projects.
In Cornwall, from where the company has operated since 1976, the company is based at a purpose-built facility at Bickland Industrial Park in Falmouth. The seven acre site comprises offices, state of the art fabrication and maintenance workshop and a specialist blast and paint spraying facility.
James Amos, Business Development Manager, says: "With our range of innovative solutions, we can control the risk of undertaking unusual construction activities in difficult marine environments. As global operator in offshore survey, offshore geotechnical and seabed geophysical services, Fugro has particular strength in specialist areas such as deep water and the capability to take on large, integrated projects. We aim to de-risk major investment decisions for our clients. This includes providing them with information and advice about the best way to locate and build the foundations for production platforms, wind farms, large buildings and other infrastructure."
Leading edge services
The company is about to supply three drilling rigs for an innovative project being undertaken by BP in a remote part of Indonesia. The Tangguh Expansion Project (which will expand LNG capacity in the Papua Barat Province of Indonesia). will involve Fugro drilling out nearly a kilometre of material in the face of considerable geological challenges. "This is a great example of our expertise in supplying pile top drilling services in extreme environments" says James.
A further current example of the company’s leading-edge services is their huge project building a jetty at Hinckley Point. This involves two of the company’s largest vessels, including the flagship WaveWalker, which was selected for the project because of its unique capabilities, such as being able to ‘walk’ on the beach and cope with tides.
James says: "We have a long tradition of innovation, going back to the days when we were one of the prime movers in wind turbines right up to the present day, with a stream of ‘firsts’ to our name, including designing and manufacturing the first walking jack up and the pioneering work we have carried out in anchoring devices to the ground.
"We stand out from the competition due to the depth of our expertise combined with our commitment to innovation. This means we always go the extra mile to fully get to grips with a client’s problem and come up with holistic solutions that really deliver.
Pushing technological boundaries
"There is an increasing demand for projects to be developed further from shore and in deeper water. We have to be ready to face these challenges head on. As an example of our abilities and pushing technological boundaries, we have recently completed another ‘first’ at the Great Western Flank Phase 2 project in Australia, by installing 24 drilled anchor piles in 120 metres of water from a DP2 vessel."
James continues: "We have a real passion for constant improvement. We are always striving for improvements to our products and services that keep us at the cutting edge. We invest heavily in R&D, so we can stay at the top of our game well into the future.
"Being based in Cornwall has a number of advantages for us. Firstly, there is a terrific wealth of marine technology expertise in the region and we benefit from the talent base and supply chain. Secondly, and more intangibly, we thrive in the creative and inventive culture that makes up the lifeblood of Cornwall. It is a region where people tend to think outside the box, with a positive attitude and a belief that ‘if you can imagine it, you can make it happen’. This creates a vibrant and productive environment in which to work and makes the region an excellent launchpad from which to continue to grow our global business."
